25 years ago the education field gained a great educator. Who you may ask? Randall “Scott” Howell. Howell is not only a dean but he coaches softball and bowling at West Orange High School. Over the years he has gained respect and trust from a lot of the kids. He may be a disciplinary dean but kids would still go to him and tell him everything because they trust that he won’t go around and say stuff to people and use it against them. It takes alot to get a bunch of teenages who are trying to figure themselves out to be able to trust and respect you and yet he managed.
Becoming Coach Howell
Howell decided that after getting his AA that he wanted to go into the education field he states that he “always enjoyed working with kids cause I used to coach a little league team”. He started off working as a regular teacher at Colonial High School back in January of 1999 teaching algebra 1 a to 9th and 10th grade students. After a couple years of teaching Coach Howell got an opportunity to move up the ladder and be a dean. He says that he “Got an opportunity of becoming a dean at Ocoee high school due to a principal change.” Once that principal left Ocoee and asked Howell if he wanted go to West Orange Coach Howell followed him over and he is now a disciplinary dean, a coach of both the bowling and softball teams, as well as a assistant athletic director.
Would he start teaching again?
Although He loves what he does, if he had the chance he would go back down and become a teacher again. He enjoyed the smiles on kids’ faces and being able to help them to pass a course that is not very easy math. When Howell was still teaching he had this incident where he realized he chose the right path. A student of his was a good student and really tried in the class to get a good grade. All year long he got a C when it came down to the last quarter he went into Howells portable and asked him what was his grade when Coach howell told him that he finished off when a B the kid hugged Howell had a big smile on his face and when running out the classroom in joy coach howell knew education is where he is supposed to be at.
What was the original plan?
What would he be doing if he wasn’t in the education field? Howell really wanted to go into the marine biology field to study sharks. The reason why he didn’t choose that is unknown, but I am glad that he chose the career he did.
How does he build relationships with students?
When I asked him how he would describe his relationship with his students he stated “Every relationship is different because every kid is different. I try to get to know all students so that they have trust and confidence in me to be able to help them as they grow and mature.” Howell really takes his time in gaining the trust and really helping the students grow and mature.
