You open your phone, you go to Google, you see an article on Childish Gambino, it says he had a Stroke, and you wonder, who IS Childish Gambino?
Glover’s Start
Childish Gambino is a very talented man. He produces music, raps, sings, acts, writes, and directs. He does so many different things, and there is so much to go in depth about, so it would be best to start at the very beginning. Donald Glover started his career as a writer for the sitcom 30 Rock from 2006 to 2009. Then, in the 2010s, there weren’t too many roles for Glover’s acting career. Community was the breakthrough he needed, but then, when he made his first album, Camp, it was the start of his musical alter ego, Childish Gambino.
Gambino’s Start
Childish Gambino’s debut album was released in 2011, giving the Bino’s name a breakthrough in the Rap industry, mixing Rap with Soul and Funk. Giving people a brand-new mix of genres, Bino decided to keep going with music, releasing another album, Because the Internet (BTI) in 2013. BTI was an album released with a screenplay and multiple music videos, and at different times, to play certain songs while reading the screenplay. With every song being musically perfect for a 1-hour album. Then, in 2014, Bino released a R&B mixtape named Kauai, trying out the genre of R&B. In 2016, Bino Made Awaken, My Love! after someone said he never made true hits, then he did with Redbone being his #1 song in his discography. After a time where Bino didn’t release any music until 2024 with Atavista, he later that year also released Bando Stone and the new world, an album that is the soundtrack to a movie he is producing that has yet to come out as of now. But hopefully it will be released soon.
Camp
Camp is Bino’s debut album, released in 2011. The album has a story that explores race, masculinity, fame, and feeling like an outsider, and the story continues in the next album, but Camp is about a boy; we never find out his name, so he is referred to as “The Boy”. The album is framed as a nostalgic, yet frustrating, look back at adolescence, with the title setting up a “summer camp” theme. It includes intense personal storytelling, particularly in the closing track “That Power,” which details a defining, awkward childhood memory. Bino tackles being viewed as not “black enough” and the complexities of identity, frequently referencing his experience growing up as a nerdy Black kid. The album focuses on his rise to success, his critics, and his insecurities, often using hyperbolic, punchline-heavy lyrics to address criticisms of his authenticity as a rapper. Produced largely by Ludwig Göransson, the album features a theatrical, high-energy pop-rap sound that diverged from typical 2011 hip-hop, featuring piano, strings, and intense, fast-paced flows. Camp was seen as a bold debut that used humor to navigate personal insecurities, establishing Gambino as a distinct and complex voice in the rap genre.
Because the Internet
Bino’s Because the Internet (BTI) is a multimedia concept album exploring existential dread, loneliness, and identity in the digital age. It follows “the boy,” a wealthy, internet-addicted character, whose virtual, disconnected life spirals into a crisis, highlighting how technology shapes modern social interactions and removes genuine human connection. The Storyline (“The Boy”): The album is accompanied by a screenplay that maps out the narrative of “the boy” (partially a projection of Donald Glover), a rich young man living in a mansion, dealing with ennui and social disconnection.Internet as Language: The album explores the idea that the internet is the new global language, influencing how we live, communicate, and create, with no rules.Themes: It deals with the irony of being highly connected online but isolated in reality, as well as the transition from youth to adulthood.ultimedia Experience: The project included a screenplay, a short film prelude, and specific music videos that, when combined, create a sometimes cryptic, immersive story. Theatrical Performance: During the album’s promotion, Donald Glover stayed in character as “the boy” for interviews, blurring the lines between fiction and reality.
“Awaken, My Love!”
“Awaken, My Love!” is a 2016 album heavily inspired by the birth of his first child, navigating themes of love, fear, fatherhood, and social issues through a 1970s funk, soul, and rock aesthetic. It acts as a raw, emotional shift from his previous rap-focused work, functioning as a “bedtime story” or love letter to his son. The album is often viewed as a personal exploration of fear and love surrounding his son’s birth, as heard on tracks like “Baby Boy” and “Stand Tall”. It is interpreted as a plea to “awaken” and see past the illusions of reality, addressing themes of systemic oppression and black liberation, especially in songs like “Boogieman”. Musically, it is a conscious homage to artists like Funkadelic and Sly and the Family Stone, focusing on feeling and tone over complex lyricism. It showcases a vulnerability and a “creative leap” for Glover, who wanted to create a feeling rather than straightforward narratives. Some fans view the phrase as an instruction to wake up to love within oneself.
There are still 2 more albums, but I won’t be extending this because it will get long.
Giving Up The Gambino Name

Glover is leaving the Rap community. Bino said in an interview that he would be retiring from music, saying that he doesn’t want to be singing offensive lyrics at concerts at age 52, which is reasonable, but that’s not the only reason. On Bino’s Bando Stone Tour, he suffered a stroke. After this, he felt he was too old for concerts as often as he had been. Which means that Childish Gambino is now gone. Glover will still do some concerts and show up in some places, but besides that, we have to say goodbye to Childish Gambino after 12 years of music.
Where Will We See Glover Now?
Glover may be gone from the music industry, but he will still act in movies and be a voice actor. As of recently, Donald Glover has taken the role of Yoshi in the second Mario movie. And I’m sure he’ll take more acting roles, and hopefully come back to music sometime again in the future.
